NEIL IS A 6TH DAN!!! - CONGRATULATIONS! WOW!

Neil and Mr Mealing
Oct 2010
Wow - Neil Roode gets his Sixth Dan. This makes Neil Britains youngest BJC 6th Dan!!! Neil said... "It hasn't sunk in yet... what an honour! - I better start wearing my zori's."

Rokudan
(六段:ろくだん): sixth degree black belt!

Around 1930 the Kodokan created a new belt to recognize the special achievements of high ranking black belts. Jigoro Kano chose to recognize sixth, seventh, and eighth degree black belts with a special obi made of alternating red and white panels (kohaku obi). The white color was chosen for purity, and red for the intense desire to train and the sacrifices made. The colors red and white are an enduring symbol of Japan, and they have been used in Judo since Jigoro Kano started the first Red and White Tournament in 1884. The kohaku obi is often worn for special occasions, but it is not required to be worn at any time and the black belt remains the standard for all the yudansha ranks. In 1943 the Kodokan created the optional red belt to recognize 9th and 10th degree yudansha.

Rest In Peace Hosaka Sensei

Mr Hosaka
April 2010
By now most of you will know of the sad death of Mr. Hosaka.

Akinori Hosaka Kodokan 8th Dan, in the last 24 years of his life he dedicated himself to improving British Judo and committed himself to the British Judo Council as Chief Examiner and Technical Advisor. The BJC’s traditional values and approach to judo made a good companion to the promotion of his own ideals, on how to improve British judo.

He will be greatly missed! Facebook have a tribute page if you would like to leave a message, search R.I.P Mr Hosaka.
